You're looking for some "project" to fill the thesis-sized hole? May I suggest an equally ongoing and frustrating project? One in which you will feel like you have personally met tangible goals, gotten something accomplished, moved forward even. But then outsiders will come, look at what you've done, and inevitably say, "You can do more, you can do better". The project, if I may be so bold as to name it is called "Brushing the Cats". It is exactly what you think it is. Brushing the cats.
