Thanks for the recommendation of "The Anxious Organization." I'm going to put in on my library list -- I think it would apply to my workplace as well as the church I'm involved with.
Posted by: Megan at January 14, 2008 11:38 AMI had Doing Justice as one of my texts for a class at North Park, what I remember it was a good book, though it was definitely oriented toward urban and not suburban. I had forgotten it until you mentioned it today. Makes me think I should look at it again and see how it reads now that I am pastoring an urban church start. One of the companion texts was Making Peace with Conflict. I mention it because it might border/overlap with the Anxious Congregation. That is if want further reading on these topics after the course. ;-)
Not having seen the play or the movie I can't really comment on your experience of the difference between the two. However, from what I have heard of Sweeny Todd, my thought was that it would be a horror film, given that the subject matter is horrific or so it seems. I mean Stephen Sondheim's musicals (all that I have seen) work (well I love them for this reason) are horrific but softened ironically with the musical numbers, and at the same time increase some of the horror. I was expecting that I would only want to see the movie once given my experience of Sondheim musicals. Kind of like Sin City, in that there is just something about the genre of film that on certain subject matter is more impacting.
Well that's my two cents worth without having ever seen the Sondheim musical and still having yet seen the movie.
Megan, I would encourage you to read it. You'll blow through it in an afternoon, but chew on it for a while most likely. It's written for businesses, but an organization is an organization, you know?
Larry, again, I feel like I should have known. But there you go...urf.
