could it be...dracula?!

Istanbul was Constantinople
Now it's Istanbul, not Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Now it's Turkish delight on a moonlit night

Every gal in Constantinople
Lives in Istanbul, not Constantinople
So if you've a date in Constantinople
She'll be waiting in Istanbul

Even old New York was once New Amsterdam
Why they changed it I can't say
People just liked it better that way

So take me back to Constantinople
No, you can't go back to Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Why did Constantinople get the works
That's nobody's business but the Turks

Istanbul (Istanbul)
Istanbul (Istanbul)

Even old New York was once New Amsterdam
Why they changed it I can't say
People just liked it better that way

Istanbul was Constantinople
Now it's Istanbul, not Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Why did Constantinople get the works
That's nobody's business but the Turks

So take me back to Constantinople
No, you can't go back to Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Why did Constantinople get the works
That's nobody's business but the Turks

Istanbul

Well it happened again. Yep. Someone got hold of my card number. Mine. All of our money is gone. The bank will, we hope, likely refund us. This is what their insurance is all about. I will go down to the bank this afternoon to fill out the requisite paperwork. Shit.

So, where was the money spent? Istanbul. Not Constantinople, but Istanbul. Yay us. I have never been, but I hear it is a remarkable city.

It's really quite mysterious. I just finished reading The Historian. It is yet another interesting book about Dracula. This one spends more time delving into the historical along side the mysterious. A lot happens in Istanbul (not Constantinople) in the book. So, maybe Dracula is into our funds. Who can say.

Anyway, pray for us, for Istanbul, and whatever putz took our money. Pray that we get it all back. Shit.

I'm so sorry to hear that, Tripp. I hope your bankers are very reasonable and VERY quick about the refund.

Oy! And this isn't the first time? All gone? Like, cleaned out the checking account?!

The closest I've come to this was someone using my credit card number to rent cars in places I'd never been. I got the money back for that.

This is the second time in four months. The second. Yeah. Oy.

Posted by: Tripp at January 24, 2007 11:51 AM

did they close your account last time and open an entirely new one? Or, did you just get new cards with new numbers?

Maybe look into getting an entirely new account.

They just changed the numbers. The last fraud was in Mexico City. So, they are branching out. I am hoping not to have to get a new account for the two of us. We share it. What a mess that would turn out to be!

That's terrible. Having been the victim of fraud before, it sucks.

I also went to school with Elizabeth Kostova. Just a sidenote.

Posted by: Jorge Sanchez at January 24, 2007 03:32 PM

Um...$3,880.59...holy shit.

Posted by: Tripp at January 24, 2007 04:48 PM

FWIW, it's not really any bigger deal to close a joint account and open a new one, than to do it with an account held by one person. As long as you can both be there to sign the documents, it's not that much of a mess.

Our branch manager is a good guy and had all the paperwork ready for me to sign. New card on the way. We will pay no overdraft charges etc. And he says that changing the account will make no difference here. It is not about the account but about the card. He put out that fire right away.

Good guy.

Posted by: Tripp at January 24, 2007 05:11 PM

oh my goodness! shit is right. so, so sorry this happened to you again. how are they getting your card number? and is the money being taken in one fell swoop? we had our number stolen and the bank fraud detectors called on a Saturday morning to ask if we had made certain purchases. the guy had only bought about $500 in pizza, porn, and car parts. the bank gave us our money back in less than 48 hours, and they did catch the guy who did it- he was stupid enough to use his address for the car part delivery. it wasn't the first time he had done prison time for this. but when it's international, i don't know what authorities can do?

sorry to hear that tripp. if it's any consolation, istanbul is a great city. it's worth going, even if just to look for your cash.

Posted by: upyernoz at January 24, 2007 06:07 PM

So, um, anyone know the exchange rate?

Posted by: Tripp at January 24, 2007 06:39 PM

1 Turkish lirasi = about 70 cents U.S., according to Google.

The things you can find out online...

Posted by: Megan at January 24, 2007 06:43 PM

That's 5,505.71 in New Turkish Lire.

Posted by: Jorge Sanchez at January 24, 2007 09:40 PM

Oh man ... sorry to hear that. Glad to know your bank was good about working with you.

And yes, sometimes "shit" is the only word that works . . . and maybe a few others.

Hope you can sleep tonight.

Posted by: Reverend Ref at January 24, 2007 10:21 PM

Gee. I was hoping for a much better excange rate.

Posted by: Tripp at January 25, 2007 06:48 AM

That's tough stuff, friend. Ask your bank to help you figure out how this happened twice. It may be that if you look at your charge/ATM recrords for the 7 days preceeding the hijacking, you may see a group of common charges/withdrawals that could point you toward a fraud ring.

Obviously, let John or me know whether you are in the hole after the bank and the insurer do their thing. Good luck.

Tripp, I'm so sorry this has happened again - that's an awful feeling!!!

Posted by: kate setzer kamphausen at January 25, 2007 12:04 PM

I don't believe this!! This is one of those "Why to do bad things happen to good people?" moments. Ugh. Ummm, I guess you can find some consolation in the fact that while you'll be dancin' with St. Peter up in Heaven, the jerk(s) who did this will be screamin' for an air conditioner. Yeah.

What Megan, Jorge, Ref and Kate said.
