separation of church and state news

I posted the complete article here in the forum. I also included a poll. Please take a moment to stop by and let me know what you think.

"One in three high-school students in this republic says that the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States goes too far in the rights it guarantees to you as a citizen," Shurden said, citing a recent Knight Foundation survey of 100,000 high-school students. "These are astonishing and inconceivable attitudes for high-school students in the United States of America. This is a scary phone call in the middle of the night about what has happened in our nation."

Thanks for posting the article! I couldn't get the poll to accept my vote, but I didn't have a lot of time to spend coaxing it.

I did, however, go off on a little research quest -- first to refresh myself on the actual text of the First Amendment. Then, since I don't know what Baptist background the article's author was referring to, I started to wonder: in the past that he spoke of, were the Baptists a small denomination who particularly needed the protection the First Amendment offers? And now, with the Baptists being a leading branch of Christian affiliation in the U.S. (second behind the Catholics as of 2001, according to the Pew Research Council) might some of the "cataracts" the author referred to have developed because First Amendment protections weren't a front-and-center need for the denomination anymore?

Just thoughts.

Megan, I am glad you appreciate the article.

I think the polling trouble may be because you are not a "member" of the forum. I will fix that, I hope. I did not know that I had discriminatory software. Urgh.

Megan,

I had the same problem with the voting, but realized I was not logged on. Once I did that I had no problem voting.

Roger Williams, founder of Rhode Island, was one of the founders of the Baptist Churches in America. He was persecuted in, I think, Massachusetts for opposing infant baptism. So, he fled and founded Rhode Island as a land of Religious Liberty. He was one of the influential people involed in the 1st amendment. (this is all to the best of my recolection...anyone feel free to correct,)

I think your statment about the catarcts are on point. It is one of those you don't realize you have it until it is gone things.

So, I applaud the efforts to bring the issue more upfront within the Baptist Churches. With all of the talk about tradition and history involved in the election of the pope, I think it is good for those of us not in that tradition to reflect on our.
